Descrizione:
Gadolinio è un metallo raro di colore bianco argenteo, malleabile e duttile, classificato sotto la serie dei lantanoidi nella tavola periodica. Ha il numero atomico 64 ed è noto per le sue uniche proprietà magnetiche, in particolare per la sua capacità di diventare ferromagnetico a temperatura ambiente, il che è relativamente raro tra i lantanoidi. Gadolinio è altamente reattivo, specialmente in forma di polvere, e può ossidarsi rapidamente quando esposto all'aria, formando uno strato di ossido protettivo. Ha un alto punto di fusione ed è spesso utilizzato in varie applicazioni, inclusa l'imaging a risonanza magnetica (MRI) come agente di contrasto grazie alle sue proprietà paramagnetiche. Inoltre, i composti di Gadolinio sono utilizzati in applicazioni di cattura di neutroni e come fosfori in alcuni tipi di schermi. Il metallo è tipicamente ottenuto da minerali come bastnasite e monazite ed è spesso lavorato attraverso metodi di estrazione complessi.
