Descrizione:
Indio è un metallo post-transizione con il simbolo chimico "In" e il numero CAS 7440-74-6. È caratterizzato dal suo aspetto bianco argentato ed è relativamente morbido, malleabile e duttile, il che consente di essere facilmente modellato e formato. Indio ha un basso punto di fusione rispetto a molti metalli, il che lo rende utile in varie applicazioni, tra cui saldatura ed elettronica. Presenta una proprietà unica di espandersi durante la solidificazione, che è rara tra i metalli. Indio si trova principalmente nei minerali di zinco ed è spesso estratto come sottoprodotto della raffinazione dello zinco. Chimicamente, è noto avere uno stato di ossidazione +1 e +3, con lo stato +3 che è più stabile nei composti. Indio è atossico e ha applicazioni nella produzione di ossido di stagno Indio (ITO), che è ampiamente utilizzato in schermi touch e display a pannello piatto. Inoltre, svolge un ruolo nello sviluppo di leghe particolari ed è oggetto di ricerca per potenziali utilizzi in celle solari e altre tecnologie avanzate.
