Il Tetracloruro di titanio (TiCl4) è un liquido incolore o giallastro a temperatura ambiente, noto per il suo odore pungente e acre. È un composto altamente reattivo, utilizzato principalmente nella produzione di metallo di titanio e biossido di titanio, nonché in vari processi di sintesi chimica. Il TiCl4 ha un peso molecolare di circa 189,7 g/mol e presenta una geometria molecolare tetraedrica. È solubile in solventi organici ma reagisce vigorosamente con l'acqua, producendo acido cloridrico e biossido di titanio, il che lo rende un forte acido di Lewis. A causa della sua reattività, deve essere maneggiato con cura, poiché può causare irritazione severa alla pelle, agli occhi e al sistema respiratorio.     Titanium chloride is a chemical compound with the formula TiCl4. It is soluble in many organic solvents, and it reacts with water to form an acidic solution of hydrochloric acid. Titanium chloride is used as a catalyst for the synthesis of polymers such as poly(trifluoroethylene) and poly(vinyl chloride). This compound also has been used in clinical studies to treat chronic bronchitis. The reaction mechanism of titanium chloride is not clear, but it has been suggested that it may involve a Friedel-Crafts type reaction or an electrochemical process. The transport properties of titanium chloride are not well studied, but fluorescence spectrometry indicates that the molecule contains cationic moieties and carbonyl groups.
