Glycolic acid is a dicarboxylic acid that is used as a chemical peeling agent for the treatment of hyperkeratotic skin disorders. This product has been shown to inhibit the transcription-polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in maternal blood, which may be due to its ability to form glycolate from glucose and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate. Glycolic acid inhibits the production of malonic acid by inhibiting the enzyme malonate decarboxylase, which converts malonic acid into succinic acid.
