5-Hydroxy-2-methyl-1-benzofuran-3-carboxylic acid is a fluoroquinolone that binds to the DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV enzymes, which maintain the integrity of bacterial DNA. It has shown analgesic activities in experimental models and human cells, with an EC50 value of 6.0 μM. 5-Hydroxy-2-methyl-1-benzofuran-3-carboxylic acid also inhibits the production of prostaglandins that are involved in inflammatory responses, leading to its antiinflammatory properties. This drug has been shown to be effective against MRSA and Clostridium perfringens, but not against Mycobacterium tuberculosis or Mycobacterium avium complex.
