It can be detected at concentrations of 10 parts per billion (ppb) or higher. JWH-210 has been found in wastewater, urine samples, and cell culture supernatants. JWH-210 is typically prepared by mixing biphenyl with ammonium formate in a round bottom flask. The mixture is heated to produce biphenyl diol and phenol. The biphenyl diol reacts with hydrochloric acid to produce the desired product, JWH-210. This reaction has a runtime of approximately 3 hours, depending on the amount of biphenyl and ammonium formate used. JWH-210 can be detected using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) methods that employ ultraviolet detection (UV).
