It has been shown to be an effective photocatalyst for the oxidation of sulfides and the reduction of nitrates. This compound is also able to introduce bromine into a polymer to produce copolymers with high optical properties. 3,7-Dibromodibenzothiophene 5,5-dioxide can be used as a cross-coupling reagent and polymerized to form devices such as solar cells or light emitting diodes.
