The transgenic mice, which express the cyanide-resistant cytochrome P450 2J2 (CYP2J2) in the heart and liver, show a significant decrease in cardiac injury and cardiovascular dysfunction during ischemia reperfusion. They also have lower blood pressure and reduced hepatic steatosis. CYP2J2 is an enzyme that metabolizes arachidonic acid to epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EETs), which are involved in cardioprotection and vasodilation. This enzyme also inhibits cell growth by increasing the mitochondrial membrane potential, which leads to increased production of endogenous substances such as nitric oxide. Clinical data has shown that CYP2J2 is a promising therapeutic target for the treatment of ischemic heart disease.
