2,4,6,7-Tetramethyl-2,3-dihydro-1-benzofuran-5-ol is a chlorinated benzenesulfonate. It is used in the treatment of hepatic diseases such as liver cirrhosis and chronic hepatitis. 2,4,6,7-Tetramethyl-2,3-dihydro-1-benzofuran-5-ol inhibits the synthesis of cholesterol and bile acids by competitive inhibition of 3β hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase. This compound also has a phenolic group that can be oxidized to form a phenoxy radical which may have antioxidant properties. The imidazole derivative has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against Gram positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae.
