It has been shown to be a potent and selective inhibitor of soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC). 4-(7-Hydoxy-2-isopropyl-4-oxoquinazolin-3(4H)-yl)benzonitrile also inhibits the uptake of cGMP by cells, which leads to the inhibition of norepinephrine release from nerve endings in the eye. This can lead to red eyes and constriction of the pupil.
