Fidaxomicina è un antibiotico macrolide utilizzato principalmente per il trattamento delle infezioni da Clostridium difficile. È caratterizzato dal suo meccanismo d'azione unico, che implica l'inibizione della RNA polimerasi batterica, impedendo così la sintesi proteica batterica. Questa inibizione selettiva consente a Fidaxomicina di colpire efficacemente C. difficile risparmiando la flora intestinale normale, fondamentale per mantenere la salute intestinale. Il composto è scarsamente assorbito a livello sistemico, portando a elevate concentrazioni nel tratto gastrointestinale, il che ne aumenta l'efficacia contro le infezioni intestinali.
