Menthone

Menthone is a monoterpene that is extracted from the plant Mentha arvensis. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of oral pathogens, such as Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans, by inhibiting their ability to metabolize glucose. Menthone also inhibits the activity of caffeic acid-3-O-methyltransferase (COMT), an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of caffeine into its methyl ester. This prevents COMT from converting caffeic acid into 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC), which causes DNA damage. Menthone also inhibits genotoxic activity in human blood samples, likely due to its ability to trap reactive oxygen species (ROS) and deactivate them.
