Descrizione:
Poli(metilmetacrilato) (PMMA), con il numero CAS 9011-14-7, è un polimero sintetico derivato dalla polimerizzazione di monomeri di metacrilato di metile. È un termoplastico trasparente noto per la sua eccellente chiarezza ottica, resistenza ai raggi UV e resistenza alle intemperie, rendendolo un'alternativa popolare al vetro in varie applicazioni. Il PMMA mostra una buona resistenza meccanica e rigidità, insieme a una bassa densità, che contribuisce alla sua leggerezza. È anche caratterizzato dalla sua facilità di lavorazione, che consente varie tecniche di fabbricazione come colata, estrusione e stampaggio a iniezione. Il PMMA è resistente a molti prodotti chimici, anche se può essere suscettibile a certi solventi e crepe da stress. Inoltre, ha una stabilità termica relativamente alta, ma può ammorbidirsi a temperature elevate. Grazie alle sue proprietà, il PMMA è ampiamente utilizzato in applicazioni che vanno da lenti e schermi a dispositivi medici e segnaletica. La sua biocompatibilità lo rende adatto anche per alcune applicazioni biomediche, comprese protesi dentali e impianti.
