It binds to the ion channel and regulates the flow of ions through the channel. 2MMP has been shown to be an activator of the GABAA receptor and inhibits glutamate release from presynaptic neurons. 2MMP also binds to the NMDA receptor in a competitive manner and prevents activation by glutamate. The ligand has been shown to inhibit neuronal cell death induced by oxidative stress and induce apoptosis in cancer cells.
