It can inhibit the development of new blood vessels in the eye by cross-linking the collagen fibers and inhibiting their growth. 1-Phenylbut-3-en-1-one has also been shown to have an inhibitory effect on inflammatory diseases, such as arthritis, and can be used for treatment of these conditions. The hydroxy group and alkynyl groups in this molecule are responsible for its antiinflammatory properties.
