It is a potent inhibitor of HIV replication and is used as an antiretroviral drug. 1-Methyl-1H-indazole-3-carboxamide has been shown to have antiviral activity against different types of viruses, such as hepatitis B virus, herpes simplex virus type 1, and human cytomegalovirus. The mechanism of action for this drug is not fully understood; however, it may inhibit viral protein synthesis by acting at the level of the polymerase chain reaction. This drug also has a number of side effects on the mother and infant, including metabolic disorders in both, increased body mass index in infants, and increased maternal mortality rates for women with HIV infection.

This drug also inhibits cellular proliferation and neointimal hyperplasia in a hepatoma cell line.
