The synthesis of this compound can be performed in two steps: (1) the reaction of 2,2-difluoroethanol with boron trifluoride in a hydrochloric acid solution and (2) the addition of sodium borohydride to the organic phase. This compound reacts with chloride or borohydride to yield the corresponding etherate.
