This inhibition leads to the depletion of cellular energy stores, which eventually results in cell death. 2-Hydroxyethane-1-sulfonamide also inhibits ammonolysis reactions, which converts ammonium into ammonia, a process that is necessary for nitrogen fixation in plants and bacteria.
