Calcium carbonate is used in the purification of iron, refining of sugar from sugar beet and flue gas desulfurization applications in fossil fuel power stations. It is used in blackboard chalk, printing and writing paper, paints, plastics, PVC cables, polypropylene compounds, thermosetting resins, adhesives, sealants and decorating fillers. It is an abrasive and an ingredient in many glazes. It is also used in the pharmaceutical industry as an inert filler for tablets and other pharmaceuticals.
