    Calmagite is a drug that contains iron and calcium, which is used to treat iron-deficiency anemia. Calmagite binds to the iron in transferrin and ferritin, preventing their binding with other molecules. This prevents the release of iron from these proteins and the subsequent breakdown of hemoglobin. Calmagite also has been shown to reduce levels of plasma lactate dehydrogenase, which is indicative of improved liver function. The mechanism of calmagite's action is not yet fully understood. It may be due to its ability to prevent the formation of hydrogen peroxide by catalase or its inhibition of hydroxyl radical production by superoxide dismutase.

It is used as an indicator dye in analytical chemistry and can be used in the determination of high concentrations of acid or alkali. 3,6-Dihydroxyphthalimide is an acceptor with carboxylic acids and alizarin. It has been shown to react with phenolphthalein as well as diacetate. The techniques used for determining the fluorescence properties of 3,6-dihydroxyphthalimide are similar to those used for other compounds such as fluorescein or protonated anthranilic acid. 3,6-Dihydroxyphthalimide reacts with bromophenol and bromocresol in a manner similar to the reaction between calmagite and salicylic acid.
