Hexachloro-p-xylene is a diphenyl ether that has been shown to have a number of physiological activities, including inhibition of infectious diseases. Hexachloro-p-xylene reacts with sodium carbonate in an aqueous solution to produce a fluorescence probe. The probe can be used to detect the presence of hydrochloric acid and fatty acids. Hexachloro-p-xylene can also be iodinated in order to produce an antihelminth drug with broad spectrum activity against nematodes and cestodes.
