It is thought to act by inhibiting DNA synthesis and cell division, although it also binds to topoisomerase II and can affect the process of transcription. 2-Amino-3-hydroxyanthraquinone has been shown to be transformed by licheniformis (a fungus) into a metabolite that inhibits protein synthesis in bacteria. The bacterial enzyme catalase converts 2-amino-3-hydroxyanthraquinone into alizarin, which inhibits cell growth. This compound also binds with chloride ions and forms micelles that may have an effect on surfactant properties.
