It has been shown to be a promising agent for wastewater treatment because it can reduce chlorinated organic compounds in the water and form stable complexes with them. 4,6-Dichlororesorcinol has been found to have an oxidation potential of 0.87 V (vs. NHE at pH 7) and a redox potential of -0.09 V vs. ferrocene/ferricenium (at pH 7). It is soluble in neutral pH solutions, but not in acidic or basic solutions. 4,6-Dichlororesorcinol also shows optical properties that depend on its environment.
