Peri-xanthenoxanthene has been shown to act as an optical probe, which can be used for supramolecular chemistry studies. The molecule is able to form complexes with copper oxide and nitro groups, which are functional groups that are common in dyestuffs. The synthesis of peri-xanthenoxanthene can be achieved by reacting benzene with an aluminium chloride solution.
