• Descrizione: Azamethonium bromide is a potent neurotoxin that can be used as a potential biomarker. It has been shown to have significant cytotoxicity in neuro2a cells, with an IC50 of less than 10 μM. Azamethonium bromide also causes oxidative stress and may act as a pro-oxidant by generating superoxide radicals. This neurotoxin binds to the DNA of cell nuclei and inhibits protein synthesis, leading to cell death. The neurotoxic effects of azamethonium bromide are due to its ability to bind iron ions and inhibit the conversion of ferrous iron (Fe2+) to ferric iron (Fe3+). Azamethonium bromide also induces the release of neurotrophic factors from cultured astrocytes, which may lead to neuronal survival.
