9-Acetylcarbazole is a type of carbazole with an acetyl group at position 9. It has been shown that this compound can be synthesized by the reaction of carbon disulphide, nitrogen atoms, and sodium chloride. The reaction is catalysed by aluminium and thermodynamically favoured at high temperatures. The molecular modeling simulations show that the hydrogen bond between the nitrogen atom and the chloride ion is important for the formation of 9-acetylcarbazole. The reductive elimination reaction is also efficient with aluminium as catalyst, but less so without it. Furthermore, 9-acetylcarbazole has functional groups such as a phenyl ring, a nitro group, and an acetyl group on its structure.
