3-Ethyl-2-methyl-3-pentanol is a naturally occurring liquid that has a constant boiling point and can be used in pharmaceutical preparations. It is also used as an intermediate in the synthesis of hydroxycortisol, which is a steroid hormone. 3-Ethyl-2-methyl-3-pentanol is insoluble in water and soluble in organic solvents such as dioxane, carbon tetrachloride, or carbon disulphide. The hydroxyl group on the second carbon atom of 3-ethyl-2-methyl-3 pentanol reacts with these solvents to produce a number of stereoisomeric compounds.
