1,2-Bis(phenylsulfonyl)ethane is a crystalline solid that is soluble in organic solvents and sparingly soluble in water. It has a yield of about 40% for the preparation of benzenesulfinic acid. This compound reacts with radiation to form an orthorhombic crystal structure. The sulfone bond cleaves under acidic conditions to yield phenyl sulfonic acid, which can be further oxidized to produce phenyl sulfonic acid. 1,2-Bis(phenylsulfonyl)ethane has been used as a precursor for polyester and polylactic acids via condensation reactions with diols and diamines respectively.
