Ethyl ethoxyacetate is a colorless liquid that is used as a cross-linking agent in the production of pharmaceutical preparations. It also has photochemical properties, which make it a useful light-sensitive ingredient in sunscreen preparations. Ethyl ethoxyacetate can be synthesized by reacting an aliphatic hydrocarbon with an alcohol and an acid catalyst. This reaction results in the formation of a hydroxyl group, hydroxy group, or β-amino acid on the molecule. Ethyl ethoxyacetate reacts with radiation to form free radicals, which are involved in the oxidation of blood pressure-lowering drugs and polycarboxylic acids. The solid catalyst can be prepared from ethyl ethoxyacetate by heating it with a reducing agent.
