This compound is a colorless liquid with a sweet odor. 4-Ethyl-o-xylene is used in the production of other chemicals, such as methyl derivatives, and it can be used in the extraction of aromatic hydrocarbons from coal tar. 4-Ethyl-o-xylene can also be used as an intermediate for synthesizing naphthalene, which is used in the manufacturing of plastics and pesticides. The chemical properties of this compound are similar to those of α-pinene, but it has been shown to have higher levels of carcinogenicity than α-pinene.
