N'-Desmethyl azithromycin is a synthetic compound that is insoluble in water and organic solvents. It has been shown to have antibacterial properties against gram-positive bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae. N'-Desmethyl azithromycin also has antifungal properties against Candida albicans and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This compound is metabolized in the body through the demethylation of the methyl group at position 6 of the thymidine moiety, which leads to an increase in activity. Chromatographic methods have been developed for the purification of this product.
