Clindamycin is a lincosamide antibiotic that inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. 7-epi-Clindamycin is a metabolite of clindamycin and has been shown to have a high affinity for bacterial ribosomes. This drug has been studied for its potential use as an antituberculosis agent. The drug exhibits low detection limits and can be quantified with liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry analysis. 7-epi-Clindamycin has been found to be active against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Mycobacterium avium complex, Brucella abortus, and Haemophilus influenzae.
