It inhibits tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in the production of melanin, and has been shown to have potent tyrosinase inhibitory activity in cell culture. 8-Hydroxybergapten has also been shown to be effective against collagen degradation by inhibiting the synthesis of enzymes such as collagenase, which breaks down collagen. The physiological effects of 8-hydroxybergapten are not well understood, but it has been shown to have antioxidant properties. 8-hydroxybergapten can be extracted from Angelicae Dahuricae.
