Triphenylchlorogermane is a chlorinated organometallic compound that has been shown to have pesticidal activity. It reacts with hydrogen chloride in the presence of water, forming the reactive chlorine species trifluoromethanesulfonic acid. The chlorine atom then reacts with chloride ions to form hydrogen chloride and triphenylchlorogermane hydrochloride. Triphenylchlorogermane hydrochloride then reacts with hydrogen atoms to form hydrogen gas and triphenylchlorogermane. This reaction can be used as a method for the synthesis of HCl gas.
