It has been shown to synergistically attract coleopterans and other insects with a sweet taste when combined with hexane. The compound is also an attractant for pheromones and can be used to monitor the wittig reaction. Isomers of this compound may have different chemical properties due to the stereochemistry of the α-pinene molecule.
