13-Cis-retinol is a synthetic form of vitamin A that has been found to be effective in the treatment of chronic bronchitis. This compound has been shown to inhibit acid formation, as well as the production of prostaglandins and leukotrienes, which are inflammatory mediators. 13-Cis-retinol also inhibits squamous carcinoma and human serum cell proliferation. The inhibition of this compound on these cells may be due to its ability to induce apoptosis. 13-Cis-retinol can also be used in the synthesis of other drugs such as retinoic acid, which is an anti-inflammatory drug for the treatment of skin conditions such as acne or psoriasis. It is synthesized by incubating with retinaldehyde and a fatty acid in vitro.
