It can be synthesized by chemoenzymatic conversion of methyl malonic acid, which is obtained by hydrolysis of ester compounds with fatty acids. This process also has a kinetic effect on the ring-opening reactions. Methyl 5-hexenoate has been shown to have a magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) signal at 3.2 ppm and a carbonyl group in its chemical structure. The reaction product can be detected by MRS because it absorbs electromagnetic radiation at this frequency range.
