1,4-Bis(1-methyl-1-hydroxyethyl)benzene (bis(1-methyl-1-hydroxyethyl)benzene or BMHBE) is an organic solvent that belongs to the group of aliphatic hydrocarbons. It is used in polymerization reactions as a monomer and polymerization initiator. Bis(1-methyl-1-hydroxyethyl)benzene has been used experimentally as a solvent for chlorinating hexane to produce hydrogen chloride and hydrochloric acid. It also forms cationic polymers with styrene and vinylpyridine monomers. Bis(1-methyl-1-hydroxyethyl)benzene can be reacted with chloride gas to form chlorinated solvents such as methylene chloride, 1,2 dichloroethane, and trichloroethane. This chemical is reactive with water and can react violently with oxidizing agents.
