It interacts with 2-hydroxyglutarate, which is essential for the production of metallothionein and the regulation of apoptotic signaling. Tris(hydroxymethyl-d3)amino-d2-methane has been shown to be an abiotic death inducer that can be used to study the interaction between nature and apoptotic signaling. The chemical biology of this molecule is currently being investigated.
