1-Methyl-5-phenyl-1,3-dihydrobenzo[E][1,4]diazepin-2-one is a drug that has been used to treat anxiety and depression. It is an iminium compound with a benzene ring at the 1 position and a diazepine ring at the 2 position. This drug interacts with human serum, which may be due to its affinity for chloride ions. The transfer mechanism of this drug is not fully understood but it appears to be related to imine formation. It has been shown to have affinity constants for nerve cells and growth factors such as ornithine. 1-Methyl-5-phenyl-1,3-dihydrobenzo[E][1,4]diazepin-2-one is also known as hexamethylenetetramine (HMT). It can be found in some rat poisons and was used extensively in the manufacture of explosives
