N-(Benzyloxycarbonyl)-2-aminoacetonitrile is a chemists molecule that has significant cytotoxicity. It is used as an antibacterial agent against Streptococcus pneumoniae, which is the cause of bacterial pneumonia and ear infections. The drug binds to the fatty acid biosynthesis enzyme, inhibiting the production of long-chain fatty acids such as palmitic and oleic acids. This leads to cell death through apoptosis or necrosis.
