Fenchlorphos-oxon is an analytical method that the EPA has used to determine the concentration of chlorpyrifos in environmental samples. It is a pesticide that inhibits the acetylcholinesterase enzyme, which leads to paralysis and death. Fenchlorphos-oxon can be used for the treatment of malaria and other diseases caused by parasites. This insecticide binds to cholinesterases and inhibits their activity, leading to a build up of acetylcholine at synapses. In addition, this insecticide binds with proteins or nucleic acids in the cell membrane, inhibiting protein synthesis or DNA synthesis respectively. The EPA has developed methods for analyzing fenchlorphos-oxon in environmental samples like water and soil using gas chromatography with electron capture detection (GC/ECD).
