It has been used as a fluorescent probe in surface methodology, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and receptor cells. Trans-2-hexenyl butyrate binds to the odorant binding protein pheromone receptor cells for the purpose of detecting damaged pheromones. This compound can also bind to methyl myristate and other related compounds, which are important for plant growth and reproduction. Trans-2-hexenyl butyrate is synthesized from trans-2-hexenal, an intermediate in the production of butyric acid from carbohydrates. This chemical is produced by plants such as Dysaphis plantaginea and is expressed on the surface of these plants to attract natural enemies of this pest.
