This compound has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against bacteria, fungi, and viruses. (R)-±-Phellandrene has been shown to inhibit β-glucosidase, an enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of glycosidic bonds in starch or glycogen to produce glucose. The hydrogen bonds formed between β-glucosidase and phellandrene are stronger than those formed between β-glucosidase and other substrates, which may account for its inhibition of this enzyme. (R)-±-Phellandrene also inhibits β-caryophyllene, an aromatic terpene that is related to the production of terpenes like limonene.
