Apovincamine is a drug that belongs to the group of vasoconstrictor drugs. It has inhibitory properties on receptors and is used as a drug treatment to reduce blood pressure. Apovincamine is also used to treat angina pectoris, heart failure, and other circulatory disorders. The drug binds to the alpha-adrenergic receptor in the vascular smooth muscle cells, preventing the release of norepinephrine and epinephrine from these cells. This leads to vasoconstriction of the vessels in which apovincamine is present, thereby reducing blood pressure. Apovincamine has also been shown to have antioxidant properties due to its ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species and protect against oxidative stress-induced damage.
