In a bioassay, it was shown to increase the number of times a subject would tap a lever when food was delivered as reinforcement. 3-Heptenoic acid has also been used for treatments of hexane poisoning and pheromones production. It is also used in the preparation of various compounds such as aldehydes, which are volatile compounds with a characteristic odor or taste. 3-Heptenoic acid is homologous to octanoic acid, but has three more carbons chains and one less double bond.
