It is an aldehyde and carbonyl, which inhibits mitochondrial respiration and leads to infarction. The molecule also induces metacyclic locomotion and flagellated movement in metacyclic promastigotes of Verticillium albo-atrum. 4-Benzyloxybenzophenone has also been shown to inhibit the growth of vascular smooth muscle cells, leading to cardiovascular diseases. This chemical can cause cellular death by interfering with protein synthesis.
