1-Aminopyridinium iodide is a reactive compound that can bind to receptors, including the epidermal growth factor receptor. It is also a pyridinium salt and a type of chlorine. The compound has been shown to be effective in inhibiting cancer cell growth and has been used in chemotherapy treatments. 1-Aminopyridinium iodide binds to the glycogen synthase kinase 3 enzyme, which regulates cellular processes such as cell division, and inhibits its activity. This causes the process of glycogen synthesis to stop and leads to cell death by apoptosis. 1-Aminopyridinium iodide is most commonly used in cancer research because of its ability to inhibit tumor growth.
