It has been used as a precursor in the production of dyes, pharmaceuticals, and explosives. The conversion of 4-amino-3-nitroacetophenone to 2,4,6-trinitrophenol is catalyzed by aluminium powder or activated charcoal. This reagent converts the amide group to an amine group by reacting with water in the presence of oxygen. Diethyl ether can be used as a solvent for this reaction.
