It inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the enzyme dihydropteroate synthase, which is required for the synthesis of folate and purine nucleotides. 4-(Acetylamino)benzenesulfonyl chloride also has been shown to inhibit the activity of human immunodeficiency virus reverse transcriptase and protease, as well as other enzymes such as phosphodiesterase. This drug also has pharmacokinetic properties, including high water solubility and low protein binding.
